Qualifying for Low Income Assisted Living
Subsidized housing through HUD is available through a federal program for low-income individuals and families, elderly people and people with disabilities. Income guidelines vary by location, but recipients generally earn less than 50 percent of an area's median income, and most earn less than 30 percent. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development disperses funds and services through local Public Housing Agencies (PHAs) that set standards, determine qualifications and subsidize rent costs directly to the landlord or HUD assisted living facility. If your loved one is accepted into his local PHA's voucher system, he will pay a portion of his rent, but likely no more than 30 percent of his income (or a calculated equivalent of his income based on assets and interest).
If you think your loved one may qualify for federally subsidized low income assisted living, contact your local PHA. You may also speak with a local elder care advisor from our team to find HUD housing for seniors in your area, by calling the number listed at the top of every page on this site.
Affordable Senior Housing through Housing Choice Vouchers
HUD provides low income assisted living help through their Section 8 provision by providing "vouchers" to qualified individuals. These vouchers can be used at any approved housing development that accepts HUD funds. Some senior living homes operate as HUD assisted living facilities and offer care to low income residents only. Recipients of HUD-assisted affordable senior housing can rest assured that their facility will be safe and well maintained because of strict standards that all HUD facilities must maintain.
Apply Early to Get HUD Assisted Living Help
If a crisis event has you looking into assisted living options for your loved one all of a sudden, you may not have enough time to secure low income assisted living help from HUD. Many areas maintain long waiting lists for the service, and select recipients based on criteria such as income level and type of disability. However, you never know until you try, so we recommend you seek this type of affordable senior housing from your local PHA as soon as possible.
